Rising Blue had two origins.
First it was an improvised jam with Tim and Tom Twiss back in 1980 - no words - just a groove and some harmonic colors that got recorded on a cassette. When I listened back I associated the jam with Blue Horizons - and that's as far as it went.

Through the next few years I played around with the idea and came to the title Rising Blue. i thought I could begin to see a song about Planet Earth. Through 1985 into 1986 I worked on it.

On the night of January 27-28, 1986 I stayed up all night working on a lyric - the lyric you see on this page. I walked to work at Footprints - a Birkenstock place - and heard the news of the Space Shuttle Challenger's explosion.

So I dedicate Rising Blue to the crew of the Challenger - and to their optimistic ideals - and to our beautiful planet Earth.

Rising Blue

Standing on this satellite
My footprints in the dust
Craters full of craters on a cold and lifeless moon
Gray horizons
Rising Blue

Standing here I've time to think
Of other times on other worlds
And strangers
Scattered in the dark
Just before the light
Waiting for the light
Millions of strangers whose light was the light of their world

And standing here with time to think
My heart goes out to those who saved
The living world that I see Rising Blue

Standing on this satellite
A spirit in the sky
A future with the stars
With deep deep roots in Mother Earth
So beautiful

Rising Blue
